Think babylights are just blonds? Think again. Brunettes can do wear the look too. Papanikolas says the name of the game is to simply “accent” your color. “The majority of your color should still be your natural color, only adding delicate accents to create the look,” Papanikolas says. “A few of the well-placed babylights can make your existing style look healthier and more dynamic.” To pull it off, just focus on enhancing your tone, while staying close to your natural color a la Miranda Kerr.

Milk Chocolate Balayage

According to Papanikolas ombré is “so 2013.” This season, the low maintenance option everyone is talking about is balayage, a French highlighting technique where the highlights are painted directly onto the hair. For brunettes, the best way to wear the look is achieve a shade of chocolate brown. “If you are starting with a naturally dark base, you may need to lighten your base color to achieve the milk chocolate foundation,” Papanikolas says. “I start with fine delicate highlights at the root, gradually getting thicker, chunkier and heavier towards the ends using a product like Matrix SoColor. Because I can control exactly where the highlights are placed, and depending on the amount of lightener used on each hair strand, you get a variation of different colors, tones, and intensity.” Which means you can get a seamless graduation of colors like Caterina Scorsone.

Natural Ecaille

The trend is shifting away from the dramatic contrast from roots to ends, and towards something more natural: ecaille. “The best result comes from taking your natural color and adding caramel, amber, and golden highlights,” Papanikolas says. “It's a much softer effect than ombré, and creates a more blended multi-dimension throughout the hair.” To nail the look, Papanikolas says to keep more depth at the roots, like Kelly Rowland.
