A Rolls Royce launch is always a seismic event and each one lands a notch higher on the Richter than its predecessor. But even by its own standards, the BMW-owned carmaker might have finally outdone itself with this week’s launch of the new Phantom – a luxury sedan that can make a billionaire feel bashful with just the sheer opulence of it. So what does the new Phantom boast of that can warrant its half-a-million dollar price tag? To put it simply, it’s Rolls Royce’s most-luxurious car to date – and that doesn’t say less for a brand that’s ferried the rich, the royal and some of the classiest folks to have walked the earth for more than a hundred years now.

The 2019 Phantom is an extension of a storied legacy, but it’s got one foot planted firmly in the future. Apart from the monstrous 6.75L V12 engine under the hood, the new Phantom is also the first Rolls Royce (among many more to come) to feature an aluminium architecture that’s lighter and yet 30 per cent stiffer than the ones before it. It also given the new car an engine that’s 10 per cent quieter without compromising on its power. The Phantom VIII features a gamut of small changes and improvements that are all aimed at luxury and opulence – a raised grille that makes it even more imposing than before, all-glass instrument panel, a coolbar and storage with whisky glasses and a decanter and even a dashboard that allows room for custom designs and artworks.

The interior of the Phantom comes with wood-panelled front and rear seats and behind the rear ones users will find theatre monitors. The rear also features a central console that includes the whisky glasses and decanter along with champagne flutes and the coolbox.

On the tech side, the Phantom features advancement driver-assistance features that make use of four cameras and include functions such as helicopter view, collision alert, pedestrian warning, active cruise control, lane-change and lane-departure and cross traffic warning. The Rolls Royce Phantom VIII continues the tradition of bringing coach-built levels of luxury and tradition to one of the most powerful and sophisticated drivetrains in the world. It’s the car that made other luxury cars self-consciously stare at their shoes, and seeing the new one, that’s not likely to change for another half a decade.
