How an Angry Homeless Woman Inspired an Incredible Business Idea
At 24 years old, Veronika Scott, founder of The Empowerment Plan, is doing more good than many of us will do in a lifetime. What began as a class project and a coat has grown into a nonprofit organization that serves to better the lives of the homeless in surprising ways.
Scott designed a heavy winter coat that when opened, converts into a full-body sleeping bag. The assignment was to "design something to fill actual need," but after extensive research at homeless shelters she realized that her impact could be much greater.

"A woman came out of the shelter that I was in, and she was yelling at me… She said, 'We don't need coats—coats are pointless. We need jobs,'" Scott explains.
Taking this woman's words to heart, Scott staffs her organization with people within the homeless community. As a result, she has been able not only to provide warmth but also independence and empowerment to those who she believes deserve "a second chance."

Scott says that as a child of addicts, she felt "set up for failure." Her inspiring story is anything but.
