9 Next-Level Hairstyles You Can Create with Nothing but Bobby Pins
A bobby pin's sole job is to hold your hairstyle together without being seen. But why not make it multitask? Here, nine cool ways to expose your favorite cheapie hair tool, courtesy of the one and only hair wiz Justine Marjan.
For a look that's equal parts relaxed and glam, prep your with hair texture spray and use a styling wand to curl small sections in alternating directions. Then, scrunch in a pomade for a piece-y effect. Next, mist some hairspray to slick the top half of your hair down. Finally, tuck your hair behind your ears and criss-cross sparkly pins across the back of your head.
Summer heat makes you want to keep your hair off your face, so listen up: Using your natural texture, sweep one side of your hair towards your other ear and apply some wax to the area for hold. Pin it in place and then spray extra-hold hairspray to help secure it. Finally, decoratively place flat and heart-shaped bobby pins in a half-moon formation around your ear.
Going out? This look was made for nights that start with dinner and end with dancing. Cop this style by spritzing a memory mist all over, then creating a deep side part. Next, apply a watery wax along the part and smooth the formula back with a blunt toothbrush. Carefully stack decorative bobby pins, creating a wave-like pattern around your ear. When finished, seal it with a strong-hold hairspray.
For the girl who doesn't like to wear bobby pins conventionally, this look is right up your alley. Starting with your natural texture, apply a spray wax into your hands and scrunch it in your hair. Then, create a “C”-shape using bobby pins, framing your face on either side. Be sure to insert the pin with the ridge-side facing downward, since this helps keep the pin in place.
If you're looking for a statement style, this is it. Start by spritzing a memory mist throughout your hair, and then wrap small sections vertically around a curl iron. Once your entire head is curled, run a brush through it for a more uniform curl pattern. Next, apply a watery wax (they're more pliable and easier to work through your hair) to your roots, and slick back your strands back with a fine-tooth comb. Then, insert bobby pins and clips randomly, starting at your hairline, working back through to your mid-lengths.
The easiest way to make a basic bun cool? Pearl bobby pins. First, separate your hair from the tops of your ears to the crown of the head. Clip away the back section. Next, apply a watery wax to your roots, brush the formula (and your hair) up toward the top of your head with a fine-tooth comb. Create and secure a ponytail, and then twist the hair around the base to make a tight bun. Repeat with the lower section of hair before popping in some pearl pins.
Ready to switch up your go-to summer braid look? Try this one on for size. To copy it, apply a curl jelly evenly throughout your hair, and then create a part from the tops of your ears to the crown of the head. Clip the hair away. Next, section your hair in pie-shaped partings with the points up toward the crown of your head. Begin to cornrow from the nape to the crown, and then secure the braids with bobby pins where the ends meet. To finish the look, push the remaining curls forward and add bobby pins in "X" formations along the braids.
For an insanely sleek style that looks like you spent hours on your hair, create a deep zig-zag part and brush your hair flat against your head with a boar bristle paddle brush. Then, use a strong-hold hairspray for a shellacked finish, and alternate long bobby pins with large snap clips along one side of your head.
