10 Baby Animal Videos to Remedy Your Seasonal Affective Disorder
Winter is in full swing, and it’s the time of the season where snow is no longer charming, the hours of daylight are far outnumbered by the dark ones, and the biting cold and bitter wind know no end. If you’re anything like me, a born-and-bred California girl, a dark and chilly winter can affect so much more than just your shoes—in fact, since I moved to New York from the West Coast about five years ago, I’ve dealt with seasonal affective disorder every time the weather starts to freak out.
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, its rather apt acronym, is a type of depression related to the changing of the seasons. The fall and winter months, with their lack of light, can cause a decrease in energy, an uptick in moodiness, and a general feeling of helplessness. The remedies for SAD vary, including light therapy, psychotherapy, medications, and supplements.
For me, I’ve found that a combination of these remedies works well. I’ve used light boxes, attended therapy sessions, and tried a variety of natural remedies, but I’ve found that making sure I’m getting lots of vitamin D (I take supplements in the winter), checking in with my friends and family, taking care of my health by eating well and exercising, and finding small ways to boost my mood throughout the day are truly effective.
One of the easiest ways for me to boost my mood is to keep a steady supply of baby animal videos on hand at all times—and while that does sound like justification for Internet trolling, it’s backed up by science. A study from Indiana University revealed that watching funny cat videos boosted energy and positive feelings and decreased negative ones. The study also showed that people felt less anxious, annoyed, and sad after watching a cat video; and if you’re worried that watching cat videos will make you feel guilty about being less productive after falling into a K-hole, the study also showed that the positive emotions far outweighed the guilt.
So, without further ado, I’ve rounded up the 15 cutest and funniest baby animal videos on the Web. Winter blues, be gone! There are too many adorably small kittens and newborn otters for that.
